What does your career growth and journey look like to date?

I began my career in Sudan after graduating with a bachelor’s and master’s in chemical engineering. My early roles were varied, from teaching chemistry at university, to working in water treatment and managing R&D and quality systems in industry. After a few years I wanted to explore research more deeply, especially where it connected to sustainability. That took me to the UAE, where I worked as a research assistant in chemical and process engineering. From there I moved to the UK to pursue my PhD at the University of Strathclyde.

What was your PhD research focused on?

My PhD focused on green chemistry for carbon capture. Conventional carbon capture relies on harsh corrosive chemicals. I wanted to see if we could replace those with safer and more sustainable alternatives.

Over the course of five years I tested hundreds of samples, applying the 12 principles of green chemistry to develop solvents that were effective and much less toxic. The goal was always to create solutions that industry could use in practice.

How did that lead you to OSSO?

When I finished my PhD I wanted to move into a role where my research could have real industrial impact. OSSO stood out to me straight away. The company was already innovating in water treatment and had the ambition to grow in sustainable solutions.

Joining in 2023 felt like the natural next step. It gave me the chance to take my academic knowledge and apply it directly to projects that matter.

Tell us a bit about about your role at OSSO.

I design and review wastewater treatment systems, making sure they meet regulatory standards and customer needs. I oversee our environmental lab, run R&D projects and support the sales team by reviewing site data and helping to design bespoke treatment plans.

It is a varied role. One day I might be in the lab running analysis, the next I could be mapping out treatment units or monitoring performance in the field. That variety is what makes it exciting.

What have been some highlights so far?

One of the biggest has been contributing to Hybrid C. It is a naturally derived coagulant and flocculant that replaces conventional metal based or synthetic products. We have seen it consistently outperform traditional chemicals in trials while also being safer and more sustainable.

What makes me happiest is knowing our work has both scientific value and real world impact. We are creating solutions that help clients, protect water and support a more sustainable future.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The chance to innovate and keep learning. I enjoy applying research to solve practical problems and then seeing those solutions work in the real world. It is exciting to know that what we do can improve outcomes for clients and for the environment.
